A Generous Community

As life changes and we keep to ourselves for a bit, I spend a lot of time reminiscing over past experiences with kind and good folk, a comfort against the hard to bear headlines lately. I'm reminded of all the amazing boat people we've encountered in our journeys,  and the unwavering kindness of the boating community.

 One of the stories that popped up in my head first was one of a wonderful gift in Sitka. We were getting the Singawing ready for a charter, waiting for the guests to arrive the next day. Several fishing boats were in and out, and it's never a stretch to run into a boat from Port Townsend or somewhere else close we know. Captain Mortenson was out washing down the deck and I was finishing tidying the galley when I heard him laughing and talking with someone,  it's always a good time at the docks. A few minutes later he brought the most beautiful salmon fillet down into the cabin, a gift from a generous fisherman he knew, someone who knew that people on a charter would want the best, freshest salmon we could find.

  The next day when our guests came aboard we were able to treat them to the most delicious salmon poke bowls for lunch, and share with them the story of the tasty gift. It was an extra special beginning to a great trip filled with kayaking, glaciers and bears on the way to Juneau, and its a beautiful memory to get to have.
