Shearwater was a check-in point for the R2AK racers on Denny Island, BC, and we got there about two weeks into the race. An incredible little down, it boasts a year round population of about 70, a restaurant that goes from breakfast to lunch to bar, a coffee shop with Wi-fi (first we'd had in a while) and a per capita of hard working folk that is absolutely 100%. After being so isolated on the boat for the past several days, we finally got to stretch our legs, re-provision, and check in with other people following the race as well as see racers come in and out of the checkpoint, exhausted then replenished by the welcoming community.
Provisioning a boat carrying 4 large men (keto too!) and myself in a place where the entire grocery store is just one room proved to be yet another unique and challenging task, but with assistance from Captain Mortenson I was able to get it done. One of my favorite days of the trip ended up being the day we ground the lamb roast we were able to get in Shearwater and made from scratch gyros on the spit, serving them after hiking up to a mountain lake that has red colored water full of gold flake. For me, remembering the meal helps me remember the day, I rarely have time to journal when we are on the water but I do write my menu down every day, and when I look back at it the memories of what we were doing come flooding back.
As a closing note today, I'd like to add that if anyone ever needs any Keto fat bomb recipes I have approximately 50. I made so many on this trip, so, so many. They are surprisingly yummy even if you don't follow a set diet, great for hiking!
